Vintage wedding dresses – what do you need to know?

There is a lot to get excited about when it comes to planning a wedding. And, let’s be honest, much to think about and perhaps get stressed about. But one of the most exciting aspects of it is (or should be!) choosing the right dress for the big day. While some brides-to-be may find this stressful, we want it to be fun and exciting and part of our job is to help you enjoy finding THE dress!

Vintage dresses have never really gone out of fashion, and we don’t think that’s about to change any time soon. So we have compiled a handy little guide of what you need to think about when you decide to opt for a vintage, or vintage-style, dress for your big day.

  1. Choosing a dress for your body shape

It may sound obvious, but the key to looking fabulous in your wedding dress is finding the right style to flatter your shape. It’s a topic we have talked about before – here’s a quick reminder if you want a few ideas to help you with shape and style.

  1. Choose your decade

Your shape will influence what style would suit you best, but you no doubt have a few ideas of what style you like. It could be the roaring ‘20s, the swinging ‘60s, or the disco ‘70s… If you’re not sure, don’t worry, there is plenty of choice and we will help you find the right dress style (and let’s be honest, isn’t it half the fun to try various styles on?). If your favourite style is simply not right for your shape, it’s always possible to make some alterations that will make it work better for you without losing the essence of the look you are going for.

  1. Real vintage or vintage-inspired?

Finding the perfect real vintage dress may mean looking in a few places before finding the right one. Or you may have one that has been in the family that you’d like to use. However, if you prefer something a little more bespoke, or just for you, then a vintage-inspired dress or vintage fabric may be what you need. With plenty of choice you are bound to find something you like that works for you.

  1. Alterations

The secret to getting a vintage dress to become YOUR dress is alteration. It will probably need a few tweaks anyway for a perfect fit, but you can personalise it and give it a new lease of life – perhaps make it a future vintage dress for another bride – by making one or two little changes without losing any of the character.

There are plenty of things to think about when planning your wedding. Finding the right dress should be fun and exciting, whatever style you go for.
