Five things you need to know when wedding dress shopping

There are few things more exciting than finding the perfect wedding dress for the big day (apart from the proposal you’ve been waiting for of course!). Some women know exactly what they want while others don’t know where to start. Everyone will go through trying different dresses and styles though until ‘the one’ emerges: the one that fits perfectly, the one that magically makes you look like a runway model, the one that has everyone in tears in the dressing room, the one that you know your other half will remember you forever in.
Whether you know what you want or not, shopping for the perfect wedding gown is a process. We have put together five key tips to make it as smooth and enjoyable as possible for you.
Underwear
How many times have you gone on an impromptu shopping trip only to find that you are wearing the wrong underwear? Looking for a sheer evening top while wearing your sports bra? Sound familiar? When it comes to wedding dress shopping you can’t go wrong with flesh-coloured underwear. You want something that won’t be visible through a fitted dress or that will shine through under bright lights. You should also take a strapless bra with you in case you are going for a strapless style dress. It may seem obvious, but make sure that your bra fits well. Get measured for the right size bra before you go. You’ll be amazed what a difference that can make, especially if your weight has changed recently.
Make-up
Even if you never wear make-up chances are that you will on your wedding day. So why try on dresses and not get the full effect of what it will look like on the day without it? It doesn’t have to be anything too heavy, in fact it’s better if it’s light and discrete. A little bit of mascara, some light under-eye concealer, and a bit of powder to take the shine off when you are under those lights.
Take a trusted friend
You need someone who will be honest with you. It could be your mum, it could you be your best friend, or it could even be both. Keep your circle small but invite those who will give it to you straight. They know you better than any consultant, they know your style, and they remember those disaster outfits that you thought looked good at the time!
Walk up and down
Sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how easy it is to just stand in front of a mirror admiring a dress from all angles. On the day you will be standing during the ceremony but for the most part you’ll be moving around – photos, mingling, meet and greet, and most importantly dancing! Walk around in the dress to see how it feels and to see where you may find it tricky: does it have a long train? If it’s shorter does it flare out and ride up when you are twirling on the dance floor?
Be honest
There are lots of things you need to be honest with yourself about. Is your weight going to stay the same? If not, have you set yourself a realistic goal and do you have enough time to achieve it? You may have fallen in love with a dress but is it right for the season? Do you need a wrap and will that change the style and look of the dress? Do you like a particular style but it just doesn’t suit your body shape? By being honest with yourself about what works best for you and how it will look and feel on the day is key to walking out with ‘the dress’, the one you won’t want to take off and the one that will make the day even more special.
